Long weekend (again)

May is a great month (here in Germany). Lots of short weeks because of different holidays that just happen to all be in May. So it's time to lay down the weblogging pen until Monday. See y'all then.

The power of referers

Sam notices I noticed he noticed :-). Yes referer logs are powerful tools indeed. Although I don't think Ugo ever noticed this. I tried to get him to notice a "secret message" just by using the referer log. BTW: Sam posted his remark at  "4:27:16 AM " (his time) - and I wonder is he going to bed or getting up?

Something completely different - a Timex watch with GPS - way cool. I now run quite regularly and this would be an ideal toy to have. I don't think they are available in Europe yet - but perhaps I can get one in July in San Diego (where?). Will it function in Europe or are the satellite settings different?

Weekend thought

In the past 10 years I have collected all the different visiting cards I receive on a pile on my desk. That pile is now about 6 inches high (I don't get that many). Take a walk down memory lane - go through the pile from top to bottom and see if you can remember where and when you got the card. Does the company still exist?

My (German) article on Weblogging will appear in the printed version of the German IT weekly Computerwoche next weekend (31.5.2002). It will be in the CW-Extra supplement. Lots of great webloggers get a mention - for example: Sam, Dave, Adam. An online version will appear on their website slightly later as well.

Microsoft möchte nicht das im Pentagon Open Source Software eingesetzt wird [Washington Post].

Microsoft Corp. is aggressively lobbying the Pentagon to squelch its growing use of freely distributed computer software and switch to proprietary systems such as those sold by the software giant, according to officials familiar with the campaign.

Aber

But the effort may have backfired. A May 10 report prepared for the Defense Department concluded that open source often results in more secure, less expensive applications and that, if anything, its use should be expanded.

Sowohl NASA als auch CDC setzen übrigens Cocoon ein.

Yep - count me in. I still need to work out how to move this Weblog onto my iBook so that I can bring it with me and then blog to the 'log from the conference. And now it's time to practice the opening of my presentation "and if there is anyone here blogging this - it's Matthew with 2 'T's :-)".

Cocoon Portal and REST Just

Cocoon Portal and REST

Just came accross this in Leighs last-week column on REST:

Apache Cocoon already offers a useful array of functionality in this space. The concept of a "sitemap" binds processing pipelines to HTTP requests, with the pipeline inputs being any mixture of static and dynamic resources. As the sitemap and pipeline definitions are themselves XML documents, one can imagine a suite of tools to allow point-and-click creation of services using Cocoon components.

The Cocoon portal already makes use of this and in fact the example services integrated are accessed using URIs. Moreover.com is the main provider we used to build the sample coplets. XML news in RSS format can be accessed from Moreover via a URI. Adding new external data is therefore as easy as defining the pipeline in the sitemap.

Like this:

<map:match pattern="sunspotdemocoplet-online-*.xml">

<map:generate src="http://p.moreover.com/cgi-local/page?index_{1}+xml"/>

<map:transform src="sunspotdemo/styles/coplet_MoreoverDotCom.xsl"/>

<map:serialize type=\"xml\"/>

</map:match>

Notice how the generator (map:generate) then goes "out" and fetches the news from moreover. The returned format is then formatted - using a stylesheet - into a simple HTML table for inclusion into the main portal pipeline. This is made easy because the news is returned in RSS - so we can use the same stylesheet for all the feeds. A presentation on the portal is here.

Things I heard at Jax2002

Forgot to add these last week - but some interesting pieces of information I picked up at Jax2002 last week - all heard in presentations:

"SOAP messages can be sent using HTTP, SMTP or ftp"

"The Cocoon distribution contains Axis"

"Cocoon (2) consists mainly of XSP code. There is very little Java in it." - Carsten nearly jumped for the throat :-).

Wireless - well maybe At

Wireless - well maybe

At Jax2002 they had wireless Internet access (which is pretty new for German conferences). The lower floor of the hotel and the 6th floor had WLAN access. Well nearly. Trouble was that it didn't work in all the rooms on the respective floors. So in one case we had to move to a room where the WLAN did work - which seems pretty funny really - considering the goal is supposed to be access from anywhere. I was going to take my iBook and then blog the sessions - but I didn't think they would have wireless access. And my PC does not have a WLAN card. Not yet anyway.

Weblogging Portal

At Jax2002 we presented the Cocoon XML portal. We also showed how to add (just) a new stylesheet and change the layout of the portal completely. And then we showed how to integrate RSS feeds from Weblogs as coplets (portlets). That should make someone happy. Easy. Here is a screenshot of a Cocoon portal including the Weblog coplet in action. Still looking for other ideas for the O'Reilly presentation though.

Session quality

At Jax2002 I attended quite a number of sessions and generally found the non-vendor sessions to be the best. The non-vendor speakers were generally better informed and able to answer "difficult" questions. One example for a vendor session was titled "Web services on xyz platform". The speaker (who was from xyz) started off by saying that he knew little about Web services .. duh.

900 attendees in Frankfurt (more than last year!). Attended some very good sessions on various subjects such as JBoss, Struts, JCA. Some very bad sessions (unfortunately) as well. Our Cocoon XML Portal session had around 50 people there - altough it was the last session. Thanks to all that came! I have uploaded our session slides here.

Cocoon Portal - New look

Cocoon Portal - New look and Radio!

We posted a screenshot of a different Cocoon portal look. We will be presenting this new look at Jax2002. In the example, only the stylesheet was redesigned. Notice that there is now also a coplet that will let you select from a predefined list of Radio Weblogs in RSS. Once selected the Weblog will be fetched each time you login. We are using a RadioTransformer to filter out some of the escaped tags that Radio includes in the <description> tag.

Ugo writes about the RSS

Ugo writes about the RSS problems we are having trying to aggregate Radio RSS feeds into the Cocoon portal. The escaped HTML is the problem. Alternatively, I could ask Dave to move to RSS 1.0. It's about time! ;-). I wrote to Dave on Tuesday about this - no answer yet. He has other problems methinks. All that being said, we have new coplet (Cocoon portlet) for Radio feeds working. It's just that the output isn't nice - because of the escaped HTML.
